Marphili-Simulation

English version please see below

The Marphili simulation transports participants to the year 2030, in which a novel viral disease has emerged in the Philippines. The symptoms of the disease are initially flu-like with fever, cough, muscle and limb pain. In severe cases, these can progress to severe kidney and liver inflammation, which can ultimately lead to multi-organ failure and death. Currently, there are about 1400 diagnosed cases worldwide, and nearly 1000 people have already died from the infection. Because of the high lethality, the outbreak is also followed very closely by the German public and makes headlines in the press such as „New super virus from Asia“. Thus, there is growing uncertainty among the population in Germany about the potential threat of a Marphili virus pandemic. Actual cause for concern is a family of four who landed at Frankfurt Airport after a six-month stay in the Philippines. The father is showing severe flu-like symptoms and his medical condition has gotten much worse during the flight. He is taken out of the airport directly to the clinic in Frankfurt to receive intensive medical care. Because of a suspected Marphili virus infection, he is quarantined at the special isolation ward in Frankfurt the next day. Blood samples from the family members and various contact persons are sent to the Institute of Virology in Marburg for diagnostics in order to clarify the question of whether the father is actually suffering from a Marphili virus infection and has possibly already infected other people. Within the context of the Marphili simulation, it should be clarified whether the new virus has already reached and spread in Germany. To this end, various laboratory diagnostic tests of blood samples will be conducted to determine whether and which persons are acutely infected with the Marphili virus. Then, the participants are supposed to give a press conference, where the results of the virus diagnostics will be presented and the public and various press representatives will be informed about the current Marphili outbreak situation.
